But one part of the archive, which was purchased from the Larry Rivers Foundation for an undisclosed price, includes films and videos of his two adolescent daughters, naked or topless, being interviewed by their father about their developing breasts.

One daughter, who said she was pressured to participate, beginning when she was 11, is demanding that the material be removed from the archive and returned to her and her sister.

“I kind of think that a lot of people would be very uptight, or at least a little bit concerned, wondering whether they have in their archives child pornography,” said the daughter, Emma Tamburlini, now 43.

Ms. Tamburlini said the filming contributed to her becoming anorexic at 16. “It wrecked a lot of my life actually,” she said.

Her older sister, Gwynne Rivers, declined comment.

N.Y.U. has agreed to discuss the matter and has already, at the urging of the foundation, pledged to keep the material off limits during the daughters’ lifetimes. Two years ago Ms. Tamburlini asked the foundation to destroy the tapes, but it declined.

The Rivers Foundation’s director, David Joel, said that he sympathized with Ms. Tamburlini but that he could not agree to destroy the tapes.

“I can’t be the person who says this stays and this goes,” he said. “My job is to protect the material.”

Sorry for my tone and salty language. But one of my biggest pet peeves are pretentious assholes who do something that any idiot can do (like peeing in a bucket and dropping a crucifix inside or chaining a dog to a wall and letting it starve to death) and than have the gall to call themselves "brilliant artists". No. REAL artists possess creativity and talent and actually work at their craft. Any creep with a video camera can do what Larry Rivers did. And I don't think I even need to mention the fact that, if some Joe Nobody had exploited little girls like this and filmed his crimes, he would be in prison for molestation and child porn right now. ESPECIALLY if the children were still traumatized about it after they grew up.
These videos don't serve any artistic value nor do they fall into any moral gray areas (like, say, pictures of happy kids in a bathtub or at a nudist colony would). These videos are kiddie porn, plain and simple. And shame on NYU for putting two innocent women through hell in order to defend some perverted, evil man and his crappy "art"!

So, turns out some teachers are actively trying to keep kids from developing best friend relationships.

First part of article )

As the calendar moves into summer, efforts to manage friendships don’t stop with the closing of school. In recent years Timber Lake Camp, a co-ed sleep-away camp in Phoenicia, N.Y., has started employing “friendship coaches” to work with campers to help every child become friends with everyone else. If two children seem to be too focused on each other, the camp will make sure to put them on different sports teams, seat them at different ends of the dining table or, perhaps, have a counselor invite one of them to participate in an activity with another child whom they haven’t yet gotten to know.

Happy Meal toys could be banned in Santa Clara County

As someone who has a large collection of Happy Meal toys, I just want to say "Screw you, Santa Clara politicians! And screw you, too, Nanny State!". Honestly, was neutering Cookie Monster not enough for you!?

I had a lot of respect for Carl Macek and part of me wants to attend his public memorial in Sherman Oaks this weekend. But I feel like it would be weird/disrespectful for me to go to a funeral as a "fan" when his grieving family members are going to be there mourning him. Perhaps I should just donate to the fund to help his widow cover his funeral expenses instead.

RIP Carl. You handled the idiot fanboy venom in a way far classier than I would have.

Library of Congress to permanently archive all Twitter posts.

Why the hell is this being done!? 98% of all Twitter posts consist of boring attention whores chronicling what they ate for dinner and how much they love/hate a particular celebrity (and doing so with atrocious grammar). The library of congress shouldn't be keeping track of that. Twitter is not literature. It has no place in a library!

According to ANN, some director named Wolfgang Petersen is making a live-action, American version of Satoshi Kon's awesome animated film, Paprika.

....WHY!? Paprika is one of those movies that is tailor made for the medium of animation. Any live-action adaption is going to be chock full of (expensive) CGI anyway, so why not just animate the whole damn thing? I could get behind different animators doing shorts inspired by Paprika (a la the Animatrix or Batman:Gotham Knight) because that would be really cool and interesting. But this...well, this quote from Mr.Petersen sums up why I have low hopes for this thing quite well:
""Petersen notes that his representatives first introduced him to the story through Kon's anime film: "And I saw it and bingo, I thought this is fantastic. This is a great piece. That will be a very very interesting movie." Although he plans to make the story a little more accessible for a mainstream audience, he compares the story to The Matrix in its scope."""

Note to director: The Matrix was pretentious crap and 2/3 of those movies were impossible to sit through. Maybe Paprika was a bit pretentious, too. But at least it had Kon's killer visuals.

I hope this thing rots in the same development hell as the live-action American remakes of Evangelion and Akira.

Just found this article on Jezebel. Normally I'm not a big fan of that site, but this article was really good.

Sorry Cosmo: Geeks Can Be Jerks, Too

Article and commentary under the cut )

...oh, since the article brought up the awful-looking movie She's Out Of My League; I just want to say that I really wish some movie besides Hairspray would feature a story about a dorky girl who isn't "Hollywood hot" snagging a beefcake who loves her for her sparkling personality. I can't be the only one who feels this way.

I just heard about this on the news and I thought I'd spread the word.

Info under the cut )

For those of you who don't know, Jaycee Dugard is the woman who was recently freed from the backyard prison she's been held in since she was kidnapped in 1991. She gave birth to two children (fathered by the kidnapper) since then. And the three of them will need all the help they can get to recover and get their lives on track.

A customer told me that Brittany Murphy died this morning and I was absolutely shocked! I adored the movie Clueless when I was in middle school and King of the Hill has been one of my favorite shows since it premiered back in the early 1990s. I didn't realize until now that I've been hearing her voice every week for the past 15 years!

I feel so bad for her family. Especially her brother because, according to the LA Times, he heard about her death on the internet before his family members could tell him!

It's shocking that a 32-year-old could suddenly die from a heart attack. I hope that illegal drugs didn't play a part in her untimely passing. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying a natural death is any less tragic. I'd just hate to see another talented young star stupidly kill themselves with drugs like Heath Ledger did.

Rest in peace, Brittany. Tonight, I shall marathon my King of the Hill DVDs in your honor.
