Library of Congress to permanently archive all Twitter posts.

Why the hell is this being done!? 98% of all Twitter posts consist of boring attention whores chronicling what they ate for dinner and how much they love/hate a particular celebrity (and doing so with atrocious grammar). The library of congress shouldn't be keeping track of that. Twitter is not literature. It has no place in a library!

One has to wonder if the LIbrary of Congress has the authority to archive all of Twitter given that not everyone that uses Twitter is an American citizen. Presumably, LoC won't be archiving private tweets, but I've yet to see that question covered. Also, when are they going to start archiving? Is there an opt-out process?

That's a good point. I never even thought about how this might apply to non-American Twitter users and/or Americans who would prefer to opt out.

That'll be an archive far too boring for anyone ever to complete! It makes me glad all I used my Twitter account for was for class stuff and nothing more. I still find Twitter completely pointless.

*sigh* Stuff like this makes me glad that the social networking fad was in it's infancy back when I was a dumb teenager. If Twitter had been around (and easily accessible) when I was a kid, I shudder to think about how much stupid crap would be sitting in the Library of Congress waiting to come back and embarrass me. O_o
