I just stumbled on this review of the new Suicide Squad book from DC's "New 52" re-launch. And, sadly, it seems that two more awesome comic book women have been screwed over by this fiasco: Harley Quinn and Amanda Waller.

This may seem shallow. But all of my anger stems from their redesigns (I know nothing about the writing or characterizations in the new Suicide Squad, so I can't comment on that). These two characters have always been appealing to me because of their unique looks. And now DC has ruined that.

Now that Mystery Incorporated has ended it's American TV run, I feel the need to post this essay. I know I've ranted about this subject excessively already. But this write up is my attempt to calmly explain why the way this show went down bothers me so much. I hope you all will take the time to read it and let me know what you think. Even if you're not a Scooby Doo fan and never watched Mystery Incorporated, I'm interested in hearing your opinions on the issue of feminism and what's appropriate in a franchise that's marketed toward children.

So, for those of you who don't know, there's a measure on the San Francisco ballot to ban circumcision for anyone under the age of 18. The proponents of the bill say that circumcision is no better than female genital mutilation and shouldn't be forced on babies who can't consent to it.
Believe it or not, I can understand where the proponents of the bill are coming from. I identify as Jewish (though it's more of an ethnic identity than a religious one), but I also believe that it's probably best to leave kids the way God made them.

However, because we're talking about San Francisco (one of the most Anti-Semitic places in America), it's not surprising that many of the people pushing this bill are more Anti-Jew than pro-children's rights. Check out these scans from this lovely comic book being distributed in the city by politicians and other proponents the bill:

It gets worse. The comic cover (which I'm putting under a cut because the title is mildly NSFW) features a blonde, blue-eyed superhero saving helpless babies from evil, scissor-wielding Rabbis who look like The Joker with dark hair, beards, and hook noses.

Ben Stein (best known for delivering the famous "Beuller" line in Ferris Beuller's Day Off) is a smart man who also happened to be one of the few out and proud conservatives in Hollywood. I enjoyed listening to him speak when he appeared on news shows and I had a great amount of respect for him for having the balls to finance and release the documentary Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed.
However, he recently released an op-ed about the Dominique Strauss-Kahn rape case that was so mind-bendingly stupid and offensive that I honestly thought it was satire the first time I read it! The whole article is insane, but these two paragraphs are the most appalling parts:

=======================
2.) In life, events tend to follow patterns. People who commit crimes tend to be criminals, for example. Can anyone tell me any economists who have been convicted of violent sex crimes? Can anyone tell me of any heads of nonprofit international economic entities who have ever been charged and convicted of violent sexual crimes? Is it likely that just by chance this hotel maid found the only one in this category? Maybe Mr. Strauss-Kahn is guilty but if so, he is one of a kind, and criminals are not usually one of a kind.

3.) The prosecutors say that Mr. Strauss-Kahn “forced” the complainant to have oral and other sex with him. How? Did he have a gun? Did he have a knife? He’s a short fat old man. They were in a hotel with people passing by the room constantly, if it’s anything like the many hotels I am in. How did he intimidate her in that situation? And if he was so intimidating, why did she immediately feel un-intimidated enough to alert the authorities as to her story?
=======================

If you want to read the whole article, you can see it here. Just make sure there aren't any breakable objects nearby. And shoo any small children out of the room while you're at it because, trust me, you WILL swear at the screen at least once!

Y'all are aware of the smoking hot "Old Spice Guy" (aka Isaiah Mustafa), right? If not, you can catch up with him here. I can wait.

...okay. Anyhoo, normally I abhor "shipping" real people that I don't know personally (like celebrities and whatnot) because it seems like a creepy thing to do. But after seeing this on the Valentines Day episode of Red Eye with Greg Gutfeld...

....and reacting by squealing like a 12-year-old girl at a Justin Bieber concert, I think I am officially a hypocrite now. God help me.

You wanna see Isaiah Mustafa turn Ann Coulter into a puddle of twitterpated goo with the power of his Old Spicey hotness? Skip to 2:40 in the video at this link (darn thing refuses to embed in LJ for some reason) :P

And for more history on this torrid little ship, check out their first meeting here:

I know this comic has been around for 1,000 years and has resorted to some pretty desperate publicity ploys recently (adding a gay character, having Archie marry both Betty and Veronica in separate "dream sequence" stories, having Archie make a Black girl his third bitch, etc.). But having the new cover feature the President of the United States cheating on his wife with one of his formal rivals!? SERIOUSLY!?

And before you say "sharing a milkshake isn't technically cheating", remember that this is the Archie universe. Sharing a milkshake is pretty much the Archie-world equivalent of Palin and Obama hitting third base. >_<

I just got back from the Bold Fresh show and it was a blast! I totally recommend going if it pops up in a theatre near you.

My experiences living with college students left me with little hope for my generation. I want to scream every time I see some dumbass kid wearing a Che shirt or carrying a chairman Mao tote bag. And its hard not to strangle said kids when they sing the praises of communism (while listening to the I-pod their rich parents bought them). So I'm totally looking forward to this special even though the people who should see it probably won't tune in.

No matter what side of the debate you're on, this essay is a must read for anyone who wants to understand why this issue is so divisive in the USA. I hope it'll spark a good discussion here:

Its a beautiful place. And 99% of my family is here. But, yeah, it does suck. I'd go on, but this guy articulates it so much better....
