So, one of the people I met on Deviant Art REALLY liked this sketch that I drew...

....and asked if she could color it. Naturally, I was insanely flattered that anyone would want to do this with one of my scribbles (especially since this artist is REALLY good at digitally coloring her own stuff). And here's the result:

I REALLY need to learn digital coloring! Because I can't believe something I made can look THIS good!
The colorist's DA handle is "Obligatory Optional" and her page is here. Check it out. She rocks!

Date: 2013-06-30 10:38 pm (UTC)There was a moan behind us and we whirled around. Bently was rubbing his head and climbing to his feet. "What happened?"
I held out my cane ready while Carmelita got her pistol. Oh man, I did not want to fight my best friend again. "Stay where you," I warned. "I don't want to hurt you-"
"Sly?" Bently looked up and seemed confused. "Where are we?"
I swallowed and lowered my cane. Bently called me "Sly". Not "Cooper", or "Inspector", but "Sly". "Bently-"
Suddenly, Bently's eyes widened and he ran straight towards me. "Sly! DON'T DO IT!" He grabbed me by the shirt. "Whatever you do, you can't destroy Clockwreck! It's going to cause a-"
He then trailed off and blinked. "Hold on," he glanced and his jaw dropped. "My legs? I-I can walk again." He let go of me and stared at amazement. "I can walk? But how?" HIs confusion suddenly turned to a frown and he groaned before turning to glare at me. "Sly, what did you do?"
I started laughing. It was Bently, the same old Bently I knew since I was a kid. "You're back!" I ran forward pulled Bently into a hug. "Oh man, it's good to have you back!"
"Um...glad to be back," said Bently as he returned the hug. "But what happened exactly?"
"He smacked you on the head with the cane" I heard Carmelita muttered behind. It was probably weird for her to see me hugging for what she had always thought was a high level crime lord. "Then you woke up like this."
"Of course!" Bently cried as I let him go and he smacked his forehead. "Sly, your cane is from the original timeline." He pointed to it and nodded his head. "By hitting me with hit, it restored my memories from the old timeline."
"Oh, really,," I said slowly and turned to Carmelita with a grin. "So, if I were to hit you with the cane-"
"Don't even think about it," Carmelita said in a cold tone.
I sighed as I twirled the cane in my hands. I had to admit, I doubt I could bring myself to actually hit Carmelita. Still, it would be nice to have the old Carmelita I knew back too.
"In any case," Bently continued as he removed his trench coat. "You mind bringing me up to speed? While I remember the original timeline, it has now made my memories of this current one fuzzy."
I folded my arms over my chest. "To put it simply, I destroyed Clockwreck and somehow that has cause you, Murry and my dad to become crime lords while there's another version of me running around who is a law enforcement nutjob."
Bently moaned as he rubbed his eyes. "I was afraid this would happen."
"But what I don't get," I continued. Now that I had the old Bently back, I could get a straight answer. "How come, there's a second me? That didn't happened when time got changed before."
Bently stroked his chin and started to pace. "By destroying the ancient Clockwreck Sly, you changed your own timeline so severely, it probably changed your whole personality."
He then paused and looked to me. "But, due to your immunity to the time changes, thanks to the Thievius Raccoonus, the timeline itself was force to create a whole new Sly to balance itself out."
"I had a feeling it was something like that." It was then a thought struck me. Bently had figured my immunity came from reading and learning from the Thievius Racconus. However, if that was the case then.
"Bently," I said, not sure if I wanted to hear his answer or not. "My father is alive in this timeline and I know he would have read the book too. Do you think-"
"That he might be immune too?" Bently shrugged. "It's hard to say, Sly."
"I hate to break up this fascinating lesson in time travel," Carmelita injected as she glanced back to the wide opened door. "But we need to get out of here now, before Bently's guards show up."
Bently stared wide eyed. "Guards? I have guards? Wait, didn't you say something about me being a crime lord?"
I sighed as I let Bently climbed onto my back to carry him to the window. "It's a long story, buddy."

Date: 2013-07-01 12:47 am (UTC)So they don't remember their "evil world" lives and personalities once Sly fixes them? That actually makes things a lot simpler storywise.
However, I like to think they remember some of it. Mainly because I just started drawing a scene where Penelope gets upset when she realizes that restoring the proper timeline will erase the friendship she and Carmelita have built in the "bad" timeline.
Basically, Penelope tells Carmelita that, even though she's happy to have Bentley and the boys back, she HATES the idea of losing all her memories of being Carmelita's friend and going to a timeline where they are strangers. And Carmelita comforts her before the gang initiates the mission that will restore the proper timeline (and essentially destroy their friendship/sisterhood)
....yeah, I was in the mood for a sappy, sad, gal-pal scene when I outlined that. ^_^
Since I haven't finished it yet (I only did stick figure scribbles and notes for it), I could tweek it to serve as a continuation of what you just wrote. I'm thinking I could just re-write it so that Penelope refuses to let Sly "fix" her because...
a) she still doesn't entirely trust Normal-Sly and she just CANNOT wrap her head around the idea that she could be romantically involved with Bentley
and
b) if Normal-Sly is telling the truth, then it STILL means screwing with her memories and essentially trading Carmelita (a woman she currently sees as a best friend and surrogate older sister) for Sly, Murray, and Bentley (3 dudes that she currently DESPISES because, as far as she knows, they're total bastards)
--
I'm also drawing a lot of inspiration from an episode of the 90s X-Men series called "One Man's Worth". In that episode, a time-traveling villain assassinates a young Professor Charles Xavier in the 1950s. And him dying young results in a human vs mutant war that fucks up the whole world.
Two mutants (I can't remember their names ^_^;) recruit AU-Storm and AU-Wolverine to help them save Professor X and fix everything. However, in the devastated AU setting, Storm and Wolverine are a happily married couple. And when AU-Wolverine finds out that he and Storm never fall in love in the "proper" timeline, he refuses to save Professor X's life and tells the two time-travelers that he'd rather live in hell with his wife than in Paradise without her. But Storm makes the opposite choice because she doesn't believe that it's right to make the whole world suffer just to keep the man she loves.
The episode is intensely sad and romantic. And it actually explores a side of time-travel stories that few others do (ie what about the GOOD things that exist in the shitty AU timelines?). It's worth a look on YouTube if you and Stu have time.

Date: 2013-07-01 01:04 am (UTC)Oh dude, I have seen that episode and it's one of my favorite X-men episodes too. It always makes me teary eyed when AU Storm and Logan hugged each other and have one last kiss before they go back to the old timeline. I say run with it!
And to answer your question, I figure yes they do remember parts of the new timeline it just takes awhile to have both timelines juggling in your head at once and sort them out. In time, the guys will start to remember the AU timeline more clearly. So, go with your scene. ^_^ (I've been doing some doddles of Sly Cooper too by the way. XD)
And I like the idea of Penelope being reluctant, especially since in the AU she was arrest by Inspector Cooper and course Murry and Bently are crime lords here. (Just imagine the angst for Bently when he finally sees Penelope, but it's not "HIS" Penelope.)
Also, we finished Sly 3 last night and it was good. I LOVED the part of Bently and Penelope getting together. It was so cute and natural. She looked so cute in that pirate outfit too.
Honestly, story and characterwise it doesn't make sense for her to turn evil unless she was being brainwashed or badguys altered her timeline. It makes me wonder if Sanzaru were just thinking "Hey, let's restore Sly Cooper to the status quo, but we need a way to get rid of Penelope first for that to work." @_@
Also, how could Sly 4 not bring in Sly's ancestors that were a viking and a female pirate! They looked awesome, but granted considering what Sly 4 was like maybe it was just as well they didn't ruined too. I say, our Sly 4 does more with the pirate ancestor.

Date: 2013-07-01 04:21 am (UTC)After reading your scene, I imagined Bentley running to hug Penelope when he sees her (he'd probably assume that, if she's hanging with Normal-Sly, than her memories were restored before his) and she immediately screams, pushes him away, and tells Carmelita & Sly that they're INSANE for dragging "that lunatic" into their hideout. And then finding out he's supposed to be her boyfriend will just strengthen her resolve to not let Sly "fix" her.
Also, we finished Sly 3 last night and it was good. I LOVED the part of Bently and Penelope getting together. It was so cute and natural. She looked so cute in that pirate outfit too.
"No one touches that turtle....but ME"
...yeah, that line is just so badass! It totally caught me off guard the first time I played it as a teen! XD
As much as I LOVE Sly&Carmelita, I always thought that Bentley and Penelope's relationship felt more natural. Mainly because they had to start over and build a friendship after their first in-person meeting turned out to be a....disappointment (btw, didn't you LOVE the "internet photos" joke? I sure did! XD). And they didn't hook up until after they spent time living together, working together, and getting to know one another as friends.
You know what Sly 3 scene REALLY hit me when I replayed it to flush out the memories of the-game-that-shall-not-be-named? In the scene toward the end where Sly is being crushed by the monster and believes he's about to die, he says that seeing Penelope & Bentley together and how happy they were made him realize what the important things in life really are. And it made him realize that, if he REALLY loved Carmelita and wanted to be with her, he'd need to make some serious changes in his life.
So, in a way, Penelope is responsible for Sly making the choice to give up his old life (and his family fortune) for Carmelita. And that's why Sly's complete lack of concern for Penelope's safety and his lack of an emotional reaction to her betrayal in Sly 4 is such an outrage. She had a BIG impact on his life! Losing her friendship should have MEANT something to him!!
Honestly, story and characterwise it doesn't make sense for her to turn evil unless she was being brainwashed or badguys altered her timeline. It makes me wonder if Sanzaru were just thinking "Hey, let's restore Sly Cooper to the status quo, but we need a way to get rid of Penelope first for that to work." @_@
The popular theory is that Sanzaru originally intended for her to remain a protagonist. But then they changed their minds at the last minute because they wanted to be "edgy" and/or they just wanted to get rid of her and return the status quo. Most people think this because the character designer for Sly 4 released her Penelope re-design concepts on her blog and the first three were VERY similar to Sucker Punch's version (aside from the stylistic tweeks to make her look more like a mouse and less like a bunny)
There's also a Sly 4 model sheet floating around that includes a villain that didn't appear in the game (and people are guessing he was the original England baddie)
Also, how could Sly 4 not bring in Sly's ancestors that were a viking and a female pirate! They looked awesome, but granted considering what Sly 4 was like maybe it was just as well they didn't ruined too. I say, our Sly 4 does more with the pirate ancestor.
Yeah, the lack of female ancestors in Sly 4 bugged me at first. But now I'm relieved that Henriette Cooper (the pirate lady) wasn't rebooted into a Pirate-themed stripper or something. >_<

Date: 2013-07-01 01:22 pm (UTC)Totally and you now, for me it wasn't just that scene. You know how while in Italy there was that whole pasta joke of Sly asking Bently "Do you think there's more to life? Like we're missing out on something?"
I know it was suppose to be a joke, and it was funny, but it got Stu and I wondering if perhaps Sly was hinting he was getting tired of the thieving life all together. With that said, I still don't like that Sly 4 begins with Sly plotting a theft because he was bored.
To me, considering what we saw in Sly 3, it makes more sense character wise if Sly was unwillingly dragged into being a thief like how we would do it in the Sly 4 AU. But that's just me.

Date: 2013-07-02 05:42 am (UTC)Wow! I never thought about it before. But that little joke was totally foreshadowing the ending!
Before Sly 4 happened, I always assumed that he grew disillusioned with the "Master Thief" lifestyle when he stopped and realized the price that came with it.
-It's implied that a great deal of his ancestors were either murdered or relentlessly stalked by Clockwerk.
-The criminal lifestyle lead to the Coopers making many powerful enemies (the fiendish five, Dr M, etc).
-And Sly himself watched his parents die and one of his best friends get crippled while chasing the Cooper legacy.
Also, I'm sure seeing Bentley and Penelope together made him realize that he wanted more than simply being the Catwoman to Carmelita's Batman. And he realized that he needed to be an adult and EARN her affection instead of just being a suave flirt and assuming she'd eventually fall for it.
That's the main reason I think Sly being EAGER to steal again was just so wrong for him. Not only that, Sly being FORCED to steal again opens up WAY more dramatic possibilities than him simply doing it because he has "the itch". Not to mention the conflict that would come from Carmelita knowing that Sly NEEDS to do it in order to keep his bloodline from getting wiped out!
Also, his family is being targeted by a time-traveling psycho, one of his friends is missing (and presumed to be kidnapped by said psycho), and Sly's FIRST reaction upon hearing this news from Bentely is "OMG!SWEET! Let's steal some shit!!!"!!? WTF!!? >_<

Date: 2013-07-01 11:34 pm (UTC)I think the answer is: because she didn't want to. The whole black baron thing had kind of spiraled out of her control, and I think she wanted out of the air combat game. Besides which - Sly beat her in that arena, you could make an argument for him being the better fighter pilot. (She wins at remote-control everything.)
And as a followup, one of the Cooper ancestors was a flying ace - maybe the Thievius Raccoonius had a few tips in it?...

Date: 2013-07-02 05:21 am (UTC)Funny you should mention that. The fact that the player was never allowed to control Penelope in a dogfight always bugged me (mainly because her piloting skill was half the reason they recruited her). So I recently drew a comic to try and justify why Sly flew in the Dr M bi-plane mission instead of her (WARNING! The comic REALLY sappy!):
I like your theory, too. But I like to believe that she would have at least offered to fly that mission (ESPECIALLY since Sly was injured at the time!)

Date: 2013-07-07 05:46 am (UTC)I asked Rivka what drawing she wanted, and she said Fred and Daphne getting married. I was thinking of having it be under a chuppah, with Scooby as a "flower girl", and Shaggy and Velma as attendants. Not sure who the rabbi should be, though. Maybe Shaggy as the rabbi and Velma as a bridesmaid?
