I know it was suppose to be a joke, and it was funny, but it got Stu and I wondering if perhaps Sly was hinting he was getting tired of the thieving life all together.
Wow! I never thought about it before. But that little joke was totally foreshadowing the ending!
Before Sly 4 happened, I always assumed that he grew disillusioned with the "Master Thief" lifestyle when he stopped and realized the price that came with it. -It's implied that a great deal of his ancestors were either murdered or relentlessly stalked by Clockwerk. -The criminal lifestyle lead to the Coopers making many powerful enemies (the fiendish five, Dr M, etc). -And Sly himself watched his parents die and one of his best friends get crippled while chasing the Cooper legacy.
Also, I'm sure seeing Bentley and Penelope together made him realize that he wanted more than simply being the Catwoman to Carmelita's Batman. And he realized that he needed to be an adult and EARN her affection instead of just being a suave flirt and assuming she'd eventually fall for it.
That's the main reason I think Sly being EAGER to steal again was just so wrong for him. Not only that, Sly being FORCED to steal again opens up WAY more dramatic possibilities than him simply doing it because he has "the itch". Not to mention the conflict that would come from Carmelita knowing that Sly NEEDS to do it in order to keep his bloodline from getting wiped out!
Also, his family is being targeted by a time-traveling psycho, one of his friends is missing (and presumed to be kidnapped by said psycho), and Sly's FIRST reaction upon hearing this news from Bentely is "OMG!SWEET! Let's steal some shit!!!"!!? WTF!!? >_<
