Watching the new Scooby episode (which was awesome, by the way) tonight reminded me why I always liked Velma. I always had a complex about my height; and it was neat to see an almost adult woman who was obviously short and yet still awesome.
The situation in the comic is actually based on something that really happened. Back when my Aunt was still just my Uncle's girlfriend, she ALWAYS wore platform shoes. After they got engaged, she stopped wearing them altogether. She told me that she thought the platforms would make the height difference between them less noticeable. But then she realized that the difference was so significant (she's 5'3" and he's 6'9") that it was stupid to think that the few inches added by platforms would make them look any less awkward together.
I started thinking about my Aunt and Uncle while watching the show, which is why I opted to use Scooby characters (plus, fanart is fun!).
Over the past few years I've gotten a LOT more comfortable with my height. I used to wish I could be at least six feet tall like my cousins, baby sister, and paternal grandmother. But once I realized that being 5'1" is somewhat normal for women who don't have my family's circus freak gene, I started to feel better.
I also got a little taste of shadenfreude when I overheard my cousin and baby sister (who used to tease me constantly about being tiny) talk about how rough it is for them to find dates because all the boys they know are way shorter than they are. At least I know I'll never have that problem! ~_^
