I got the urge to draw Wonder Woman while waiting for an oil change a while back. This cute idea was the first thing to come to mind...

...then I sketched out a rough idea for my ideal Wonder Woman TV series!

I love the animated Wonder Woman movie that was made a few years ago (I need to review that here one of these days). But my one beef with it was the way it handled a character named Etta Candy. In the movie, Etta's one scene featured her acting catty and hitting on Diana's love interest. And I can't shake the feeling that the only reason they slimmed her down was because they believed the audience wouldn't believe Etta as a "sexpot" (or they feared that the audience would think they were mocking over-weight women).

The original 1940s-50s Etta was basically Wonder Woman's goofy sidekick. She loved sweets, led a sorority, and once helped Wonder Woman conquer a NAZI compound with the help of her sorority sisters. For a chubby female sidekick character (who mainly existed as a walking fat joke), she was pretty damn awesome!!

Subsequent WW canons toned her wackyness down and had her lose weight (via lame PSA comics about eating disorders and good nutrition :P). But I like the idea of her being Diana's silly BFF and/or sidekick. Having Etta Candy be the one to educate Diana about the ways of Man's World (specifically, how to be a woman in Man's World) would be really cute. I'd love to see something along the lines of Lauren Faust's "Super Best Friends Forever" for Wonder Woman and Etta. Wouldn't that be cool?

Anyhoo, here are the sketches I did when the idea hit me:

Oh, and I guess Steve Trevor can join in, too.

I think the idea of the three of them being a trio of buddies is more fun than making Steve a love interest for Diana or Etta. But Steve hooking up with Diana could be fun. If they did hook up, I'd like their relationship to be handled something like this:

G-d I LOVE The Brave and the Bold!! ^_^

If this were a show, it would be AMAZING!!

I HIGHLY recommend that animated movie! Aside from the Etta thing, it was a great intro to Diana's origin and just a wicked fun movie. Best of all, most of the creative team were women. So the writing felt real and the romance didn't eat up the plot or make me wanna gag.

As much as Wonder Woman deserves the exposure a live-action movie would bring, I don't think the odds of a theatrical WW movie being GOOD are very high. So I'm not sad that there isn't one in the pipeline.
Casting would be really difficult because most working actresses (especially POPULAR actresses) are waifs. Wonder Woman needs to look like she could kick someone's ass and I can think of very few actresses who fit that bill.

Also, Hollywood sucks at writing movies for women. And the trend of making all superhero movies "gritty and dark" would clash with WW's campier origin story and outfit.

I'd love it if a great WW movie came along and proved me wrong. But I wont hold my breath.
