1. Comment with "May the odds be /ever/ in your favor!"
2. I will give you a letter.
3. Post the names of five fictional characters whose names begin with that letter, and your thoughts on each. The characters can be from books, movies, or TV shows

Today, this meme is brought to you by the letter "B"....

Babs Bunny (Tiny Toon Adventures)

At first glance, Babs comes across as a "token girl" character who only existed to add some estrogen to the Boys Club that was the Looney Tunes Universe (and sell pink toys to little girls). However, she was actually a really strong character all on her own. One of my earliest memories is of me trying to imitate Babs' "spin around like Linda Carter and whip out a random impression" routine. The only impression I could pull off was Cher (and I practiced the hell out of it to get it right)! And I'm pretty sure that the woman who ran the day care I attended thought I was insane. XD

Anyhoo, looking back on Tiny Toons as an adult, it's really cool how she and Buster co-existed as BFFs/co-stars for a long time before they started acting like a romantic couple. Not only did it make the progression feel more real (and make shipping them more fun); letting them be friends/co-workers first allowed Babs to develop on her own instead of being pigeon-holed as "Buster's love interest". And Babs was allowed to do brutal physical comedy right alongside the boys. The writers for that show did a great job taking a concept that I'm sure angered the hell out of Looney Tunes fans back in the day (i.e. a new, modern generation of toons studying under Bugs&Co.) and making it work.

Also, am I the only one who shouted "WHY THE F**K DIDN'T YOU RECRUIT BABS!!??" when I saw Space Jam as a kid and Lola Bunny sauntered onto the screen (and was relentlessly marketed to the girls in the audience)? I guess Babs and the other Tiny Toon girls were forgotten when that movie was made (despite the fact that Tiny Toons was still fairly popular) because they weren't specifically designed to be furry sex objects.
.....and also because Bugs would lose his teaching license and/or go to cartoon jail if he hit on any of them.

Seriously, the reason that Lola was a failure as a female Looney Tune back in Space Jam was because the marketing hacks who conceived her piled on all these Spice Girls cliches ("sexy sassy RAWR grrl powah!") instead of giving her an actual personality and making her funny. The only "joke" behind her character was that she was a flirty tease who wore sexy outfits and then got indignant when dudes gave her cutesy pet names. Thank goodness the new show corrected that mistake by giving her a conservative outfit and a sense of humor to go with it!

*sigh* On a happier note: to this day, How I Spent My Summer Vacation still makes me laugh like hell. If you haven't seen it in a while (or at all) please do so now.

Bobby Hill (King of the Hill)

I love this kid and I don't care if he ain't right! And I love Pamela Segall Adlon (his voice actress) for pulling off one of the best kid voices on TV.
Usually, the "fat, dopey, idiot male who is inexplicably awesome at attracting hot girls" trope bugs the hell out of me. But I've made an exception for Bobby. Mainly because Bobby and Connie were one of the cutest young couples I'd seen in fiction (the mirror scene in the Lama episode is the sweetest thing EVER) and I was a little bummed that the final season never hinted at them getting back together.

I also like how he seems to be growing up to be a less rigid version of his father. Basically, he has all the good values (chivalry, morals, good work ethic, etc) without all of Hank's awkward social anxiety.

One of my favorite Bobby moments was in the "Peggy's Feet" episode where he comforts his mother after she spirals into depression over her self-consciousness regarding her size 16 feet. He basically says "Mom. I'm fat. And a lot of people want me to feel bad about that. But I don't let them. And you shouldn't let your bullies decide how you feel about yourself!". It just perfectly shows what the character is all about.

Boomhauer (King of the Hill)
His version of Blue Moon of Kentucky is the best ever. That is all.

And he's way sexier when he talks without his gibberish "accent"

Fun Fact: Turns out his full name is Jeff Boomhauer. It's never addressed on the show; but that's the name attached to him in some of the official promotional material.

Beavis & Butthead

Beavis and Butthead are the types of dudes I avoid like the plague in real life. But somehow Mike Judge makes them compelling to watch (provided you're willing to turn off your brain).

I admit, I had my doubts about them still being relevant when the show got a new episodes last year. The original show was extremely steeped in 90s culture and I wasn't sure if Judge could just pick the characters up as if no time had passed. But the new episodes were actually really funny. And it was worth it just to see those two rip into Jersey Shore and Katy Perry (even if they come across as too smart in some of their commentaries).

However, it did make me a little sad when I was reminded that MTV as a whole has gotten so stupid (with shows like "Teen Mom" and "Jersey Shore") that Beavis & Butthead seems sophisticated by comparison. And the fact that my little sister loves MTV makes me feel like a failure as a elder sibling somehow. Oh well. :P

Babs was always my favorite as a kid. I love how they actually gave the all girls distinctive personalities. I must have watched "How I spent My summer vacation a million times as a kid." XD

Also "May the odds be /ever/ in your favor!" Just don't give me "S" or "A". XD
