This DC Comic is from 1998 and features a story that has surprisingly overt Shaggy/Velma hints. And, believe it or not, it introduces a romantic conflict between them without turning either of them (or Scooby) into OOC jerks!
It's not perfect; but I'm just happy to know that the-show-that-shall-not-be-named was NOT the first time these two were canonized as potential romantic interests.

WHOA! Did Shaggy just kinda sorta imply that she's a tramp for going off with that guy!? DAMN! O_o

Good thing THIS version of Velma doesn't take shit from guys (no matter how much she likes them)!! That "Go date a Scooby snack" retort was awesome! XD

Awww, he tried to get her away from danger despite being pissed at her.
Granted, he loses points for doing it against her will, but it's the thought that counts, right?

Some of the characterizations are a bit odd (like Velma calling him "Norville" and Shaggy being weird about showing emotion), but I think this was a neat attempt at showcasing them as a possible romantic couple.
The other story in this comic is also centered on "romance". However, it focuses on the frightening, nightmare fuel variety of romance.

Eeew. >_<

And finally, an ad for the best superhero movie ever made....

Internet law requires that I post this clip after mentioning that movie:

Date: 2012-04-28 01:39 pm (UTC)Reading that article about Calamity Jane reminded me of the awesome short lived animated series they did. It was an action series with a female lead, it's too bad it didn't take off.

Date: 2012-04-28 03:20 pm (UTC)When I was a kid, I remember getting REALLY excited when I saw promos for the Calamity Jane cartoon and then being very frustrated and confused when the show never appeared in the Kids WB line up. It looked so freakin' cool and I can't understand why the show has stayed buried for all these years.

Date: 2012-04-28 07:54 pm (UTC)It really was an interesting show and it actually dealt with a lot of adult themes (racism, violence, etc) but they did it on a level that kids could understand but wasn't in your face either. At least from what I remember. It felt like a Batman series for girls if that makes any sense. Oh, and her side kick was an old man if you can believe it.
Just found the episodes on youtube at this channel http://www.youtube.com/user/rotarydialzno subject
Date: 2012-04-28 10:53 pm (UTC)Rumor has it that the show got buried because various local TV affiliates were appalled by the violence and/or adult themes. I think that may have been it because around that time a lot of American networks got REALLY skittish about the content of children's cartoons and did dumb things like mandate a certain amount of "educational" programming each day.
Thanks for the link!
