Review: Beauty and the Beast 3D

I wanted to see this on the big screen before it was gone, so I went out to do so this morning. It's been so long since I sat down and watched it that I had forgotten how freakin' AMAZING this movie really is! The voices, the pacing, the visuals, the songs....everything goes together perfectly. I'm somewhat immune to crying at the "death scene" since I, like every other little girl, saw this movie hundreds of times as a kid. But the Howard Ashman dedication still gets to me. Poor guy.

As for the 3D...

I was worried that I'd have a hard time watching it in 3D because I heard some people had bad reactions to it (like headaches, not being able to watch with glasses, etc). It was hard for me to clearly see the sides of the movie screen; but other than that, it worked OK for me. However, some scenes looked better than others. And I think it's simply because it's hard to convert a 20+ year old cel-animated movie into modern 3D. The only scenes in the movie that looked really cool in 3D were the opening musical number, some of the scenes in the woods, and all the scenes that had stuff like snow, bubbles, or other little things floating around.

However, the CGI stuff looked REALLY cool in 3D. I still had the problem with seeing the sides of the screen; but it wasn't so bad that it took me out of it. The Tangled short was freaking adorable (even if it was weird to hear the queen speak). The Brave trailer was great (I cannot wait to see that movie!!). And the Lorax movie looks like absolute crap. And now that I know that theatrical 3D wont break my eyes, I'll probably see the Nemo re-release when it comes out in theatres soon.

I don't do 3d movies often I've only seen B&TB, Lion King and Alice in Wonderland but in the end I think 3d is overused and stupid because it doesn't add that much into the movie.

But honestly during the prologue of B&TB, right when it starts when we see the castle into distance and the piano starts up, I started crying. It was so beautiful.

Tangled Ever After was hilarious and cute. It was so well done

I only went to the 3D version of BatB because it was the only version they had at my theaters. What I found neat is that the 3D helps brings more attention to the background details, some of the works on the flowers and such is a amazing. The only real problem I found is that it also brought attention tot he animation errors too, still I loved the movie as much as I did when I was a kid.

3D can be really cool to see when done well, but it's not something I need to see every single movie in.

I was mad when I found out that it would only be 3D. But I also noticed a lot of little things that I never noticed in the movie before. It was fun to watch the background characters and catch all the behaviors and facial expressions that I couldn't see when I saw this in a regular theatre or on video.


BTW, a few years ago, I met one of the writers of this movie. He said that the original idea was for the movie to end with Belle asking the Prince to grow a beard; but they changed it at the last minute. I kinda wish that they had kept that line in. XD

Heck, I saw the dedication to Howard Ashman forever ago, and I teared up then without knowing who he was. "Giving a mermaid her voice, and a beast his soul" is pretty deep for being so short, and I can't help but imagine he knew how much the staff working with him before he died appreciated the work he did. It is sad that he didn't get to finish working on the movie he and Alan Menken wanted to make when they initially signed on to work for Disney (that movie being Aladdin), which is a shame because it's one of my favorites.

Anyway, it sounds like you have the same issue I do seeing 3D movies. I can't see the entire screen in 3D, either, and it gets kind of distracting. I haven't seen a traditionally animated movie in 3D, but I've rediscovered a lot of them just by watching them on a widescreen t.v. since none of the detailing is lost. Plus, I was always one of those kids that paused the movie every chance I got to see how certain animations were drawn, what was happening in the background, etc. (And heck, just last night I realized there's a blue heron during the animated sequence of Enchanted. I've watched the movie countless times, but never noticed it! The best part about Disney/animated movies is that there's always something new to discover!)

And stuff. I am bummed I didn't get to see Beauty and the Beast with friends recently, but I may just have to watch it on DVD. Perhaps the pencil test version, even. :D

The Brave trailer is amazing. :D I have to agree. Get into my life, Pixar movie.
