So, I forgot to mention this in my last post, but I had one major beef when I played the game Scooby Doo: First Frights.
They gave the characters new chibi/cartoony designs; but they weren't cute. At all.

SEE!?

Seriously, what's the point of chibi-fying the caracters if you're not gonna make them cute?
So I decided to doodle some alternate designs just for the heck of it. Enjoy!

FIGHT POSES

Yes, one of the unlockables in this game is a ninja suit for Scooby Doo. And, yes, it is adorable. ^_^

I still need to finish first frights on the Wii, I already beat it on the DS.

I don't really groove on the chibis in game but they aren't bad.

Yours are definately cuter!

Did the box art look the same/similar to the in-game character design? There is something a bit lacking about the art. If nothing else, those kids don't look like they're eating enough!

I blame Michelle Obama and the War on Childhood Obesity. G-d forbid a kid see a chubby cartoon character.

Poor Fat Albert wouldn't stand a chance these days, even in post-racial America.

I'm no lover of the whole Obama regime, but I'm not really a fan of obese characters, either. (On that note, the Scooby Doo characters were never obese, considering how much food Shaggy and Scooby pack away!) I've known more than a few grotesquely overweight people, and all they're doing is ensuring a future of poor health and/or early death. I'd not want to see anyone finding that an admirable thing.

I never did watch the Fat Albert cartoon, but I certainly remember seeing the character. But, it also reminds me of Camp Candy, and what happened to John Candy... ;_;

I get your point. My mom is over 350 lbs, and dying of diabetes and fatty liver disease. At this point, all the doctors can do is give her more opiates. :-(

On the other hand, I am sick of the fashion industry telling me that at 5'7", 140 lbs, I am "plus sized" at a size 12. It's no wonder people are so messed up about their bodies!
From: [identity profile] ichiban-victory.livejournal.com
I HATE the fashion industry! I minored in sewing at university, and I was required to take fashion design classes. I learned a lot there, mainly that my body type (shorter than you, but muscular - not a stick!) will never have any support from the industry. They clothe skinny people, and if you're not a stick, you're out of luck.

I hate that our society is all about extremes anymore. It's okay to be extremely overweight (because we don't want to make such people feel bad), but it's desirable to starve yourself and be as skinny as possible. Whatever happened to the in-between, where a woman is allowed to have some body fat? Where she's allowed to have shape? Where she's allowed to be larger than a B-cup?!

Ugh...everything is so messed up.

And where is she allowed to be barely a B cup, without being told she needs implants? RAGE!!!

Google images for "Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome". It's a rarely known fact that the majority of runway models are actually genetically male. Models often adopt children, not because they are selfish, worried about ruining their figure and their career, but because they CAN'T have children of their own.

I find it fascinating that the industry has chosen a rare intersexed condition to be the icon of ultimate femininity. 0_o

(BTW, I jused to be a junior's size runway model, from age 14 to 18. When I started to grow hips I stopped getting chosen at casting calls.)

Oh, it's pretty obvious runway models aren't the typical female body shape. They're far too thin, tall...and boyish. I wish they would use women that actually have feminine body types. Yeah, sewing all those darts and curves into women's clothing is hard to do, but if you can't be bothered, why even pretend to be a woman's fashion designer?

Blargh, anyway, it's all just frustrating. I really do need to just sew my own clothes so that I can have nice clothing that actually fits well.

(Sheesh! How dare you get hips? What are you, female?) -_-

Hey, I had a thought.

Do you ever sew for other people? I can't sew to save my life, but I have a GORGEOUS collection of high fashion textiles, and some Truly Victorian patterns that I've been dying to put to use.

I'm a jewelry designer, and I've been looking for someone who's willing to do a trade. http://www.Rivkasmom.com

Umm... *flees*

In all seriousness, I have sewn for people in the past, but I'm not very confident about it. If you're just wanting something sewn from a pre-existing pattern though, I think we could work something out. Although, truth be told....I don't wear jewelry! (So sad, too! I took a jewelrymaking class forever ago and enjoyed it, but I hate wearing jewelry!)

You seem to make a lot of Steampunk stuff though. I have friends into that sort of thing...

Oh, come on. Mrs Obama has nothing to do with bad cartoon character design. We both know she's too busy harassing Ronald McDonald to do that. ~_^

It's funny you should mention that subject in a Scooby Doo post. Sadly, the latest series decided to make Velma a self-loathing teenage girl who wears her trademark sweater because she thinks she's too fat for normal clothes (PS there is NO canon precedent for that!). They also make it clear that no normal man can love her because she's such a monstrous fat ass (translation: she's not built like a coat rack like Daphne).
Long story short, I'd make sure Rivka doesn't watch that show if I were you. Unless, of course, you watch it with her and tell her it's a lesson on how not to write a story.

Rivka only gets the "old school" Scooby on video. G-d bless Goodwill!

I always thought of Velma as being younger than Daphne, and that she would get taller and slim up as she ages, because that's what happens to most girls who are built like her. I always admired that she never seemed intimidated by Daphne, and that she was so confident in herself! Even as a kid, Daphne always impressed me as being an airheaded Barbie doll wannabe.

BTW, nobody rages harder than Rivka when canon gets messed with! She's a purist to the core. She started reading a fan fic book about Star Wars once, and she was furious. She kept yelling "They're doing it all wrong!!!"

Good on you for raising her on the classic stuff. ^_^

Nerdy trivia time!
According to the official character bios; Velma is 2 years younger than the rest of the kids (in the original series, anyway). And the bio listed her height and weight as 4'9" and 95 pounds.

I personally identified with her growing up because she was offbeat and dorky and proud of it. I loved her confidence and the fact that she's one of the few fictional nerdy girls who doesn't look like either a she-beast or a cheerleader with glasses.
That's why the new series pissed me off so bad. It threw all that away and reduced her to a needy, self-loathing dingbat who hinges her self-esteem on whether or not some douchebag wants to have sex with her. :P

I like your work SO much better! You really capture the feeling of the kids. The game artwork looks so "modernized", and I don't mean that in a good way.

I'm a purist about my fandoms. The only real exception I have is glockart. Do you know her? She takes commissions from time to time, and she's really exceptional. Glockart is both her LJ and DeviantArt name. Check her out if you haven't already. She's absolutely brilliant.

Cute! Your designs are way better and I can't help but notice your Velma looks more like A Pup Named Scooby-doo Velma. XD

LOL. It's kinda hard not to notice that.

Honestly, this game made the characters out to be super young (notice that Shaggy doesn't have a goatee), so I think they would have been better off just making them look more like the Pup characters. It would have fit the tone of the game better.
