Dwayne McDuffie (best known as the creator of Static Shock) passed away this morning. This news really shocked and saddened me because, like Satoshi Kon, McDuffie was in his prime and clearly had a lot of great ideas left in him.
One of my earliest and best comic convention experiences actually involved him. I went to some tiny, podunk convention (this was WAY before my sister and I discovered large cons like SDCC) for a DCAU panel and McDuffie was one of the guests. I wanted to have something for each of the panelists to sign; so I doodled a picture of Static Shock before heading to the con. I handed it to him at the post-panel autograph session and he lit up when he saw it. Now I really want to pull that picture out of my autograph notebook, frame it, and find a place of honor for it on my wall.
On a happier note, on one of the memorial pages dedicated to him, I found this gag pitch McDuffie sent to Marvel when he noticed that every black superhero at that time had the same damn "superpower" (ie floating skateboards). I'd never seen it before and it really shows off what a sharp wit he had:

RIP Dwayne McDuffie. The comic book world is a less awesome place without you in it.
