FANART: Scooby Doo: Camp Scare...in a nutshell (Spoiler free review)

I like to think that this comic also counts toward the "Velma Dinkley Appreciation Day" idea that DQ Bunny recently proposed:



I loved this movie. But the fan-service scene in the middle was so random and jarring that it took me out of the film for a few minutes. I had to pause the DVD because I was laughing so hard! And I swear, the bucket of water gag wasn't my idea; Shaggy really does (platonically?) chase her with one at some point in the "musical fan-service montage"!
It's quite clear that the folks who storyboarded and/or animated this thing have the major hots for Velma. Don't believe me? Check out these screen shots (I just wish I could track down video of the scene because the song that plays during the fan-service montage kicks ass):

REVIEW:
Scooby Doo: Camp Scare is a great movie and I HIGHLY recommend it. I even think it's on par with Scooby Doo on Zombie Island (yeah, it's that good!). Best of all, these recent DTVs have their own separate continuity; so you don't have to deal with any of the nonsense from Mystery Incorporated (i.e. Shaggy isn't an insensitive ass, Scooby isn't a jerk, and Velma isn't a horny shrew).

The music in this movie is a lot of fun. The songs have a timeless "Beach Boys" feel to them that suits a Scooby Movie perfectly. And they're catchy as heck! You'll be humming this opening tune for hours after you hear it (I know I did!). And I love the goofy animation that was used for the opening credits!

I only had two minor beefs with this movie...

1) The Fan Service: I don't mind fan service per se. But if the artists behind these movies insist on finding excuses to stuff Daphne and Velma into reveling outfits; they need to toss us girls a bone and find an excuse to make Fred wear a speedo or something. Just sayin'

2) Velma's increasingly pathetic love life: In this movie, Velma gets a new love interest (a forest ranger). And -surprise surprise- he's a creepy misogynist jerk that Velma can't stand the sight of. This poor girl just can't catch a break, can she? :-( 


Overall, this movie is worth a rental if you love a good animated romp and totally worth a purchase if you love Scooby Doo! I'd like to gush about it some more; but I don't want to spoil anything (the mystery in the film is done very well and it's fun to try to figure it out as you watch). Just be careful when showing this to young children. Some of the monsters are pretty darn scary and the fan service montage might send little boys into early puberty (and make little girls start listening to KD Lang albums).

I've been thinking about getting this one. The animation looks real good in this too and I heard good things about the plot. (Did you see Scooby-Doo! Abracadabra-Doo? I didn't see that one, but I'm curious on how well that one was.)

You definitely won't regret buying Camp Scare!

As for Abracadabra-Doo...it wasn't bad; but it didn't wow me either. It had some great moments and the animation and music were stellar. But Madelyn Dinkley (the little sister they gave Velma for the movie) was a bit of a Sue and I didn't like the way she was shoe-horned into the gang. Plus, watching Madelyn fawn all over Shaggy is weird if you're used to watching Mystery Incorporated. I kept thinking "Jinkies! Next Thanksgiving is gonna be REALLY awkward at the Dinkley house!" XD


By the way, you draw Velma really well. ^_~

Thank you! For some reason, I find Velma to be one of the most fun characters to draw. I think it's because her design is so unique when compared to most other famous female cartoon characters. And it helps that I've known and loved her character since I was in diapers. ^_^

...Fanservice! How odd. I always pictured scooby to be very...non-servicy. I guess some people whpo wanted to see those chicks naked grew up and got hired to animate this?

I think that's pretty much exactly what happened. And most of the animators are clearly on Team Velma.
