The three non-cannon couples I remember rooting for as a kid are Dale/Gadget (Rescue Rangers), Baloo/Rebecca (Talespin), and Velma/Shaggy (Scooby Doo). I can't remember which came first, so I'm including all of them.

Dale and Gadget:
-

As a kid, I shipped Dale/Gadget because Dale was my favorite character and I wanted him to get the girl. I still ship them today because those two are both a little mental and I think that makes them more compatible. And I remember Gadget having more fun and more meaningful interactions with Dale than she did with Chip.

Baloo and Rebecca:
-

This picture isn't dirty in context. I swear!
I think I loved Baloo and Rebecca because it wasn’t the type of relationship you often see in kiddie shows: A powerful woman (actual power, not a meaningless “princess” title) and her goofy employee. Their relationship came across as very realistic. Baloo and Becky are both VERY flawed people; but those flaws work for them as a unit (Baloo's immaturity allows Becky to loosen up once in a while and Becky's hard-assedness kept Baloo's lazyness in check).
And the few romantic moments they got were really sweet. Baloo was always there to comfort her and let her cry on his shoulder after she found out that the guy she was dating that week was actually a con-man/ghost/douchebag/whatever in sheep's clothing. Poor Baloo never got to escape the friend zone.

Shaggy and Velma:
-

Yeah, I know I'm using the same couple twice in two days. What of it?
I liked Velma and Shaggy because they’re the oddballs of the gang (and because the world needs more nerdy fictional couples). And in Pup Named Scooby Doo (the first Scooby show I watched), Scooby and Velma were best buddies and I saw that as a sign that Scooby would want Shaggy to get with her when they grew up. Too bad the Mystery Incorporated writers didn’t feel the same way when they decided to pair up Shaggy and Velma officially (must…suppress…rant).

In regard to Dale, what about Foxglove? ^_-

Foxglove never grew on me. Honestly, I still can't believe that she amassed such a massive fanbase after only appearing in one episode! I guess the Chip/Gadget shippers loved her because she could get Dale out of Chip's way. LOL

I can't believe there's a fandom for the ships from this cartoon, to be honest! I was reading up on the cartoon a few months ago and came across a link to a more 'adult' Rescue Rangers comic that was Chip/Gadget, Dale/Foxglove. It was really...surreal...

I grew up on the classic Chip and Dale cartoons before Rescue Rangers came along. I especially remember a short where the two compete for the affection of a female chipmunk, so seeing that extended to Gadget in Rescue Rangers seemed completely in character for them. They almost seem to compete for her affections more to prevent the one from gaining something the other can't also have. Plus, that episode where Gadget met Sparky indicated to me she's attracted to other mice more than chipmunks. ^_-;; (Does that make me speciesist?)

Oh man, long babble session later, she was only in one episode, but I really liked Foxglove. Not to mention she had such an adorable character design! It was nice to see someone who could appreciate Dale's goofiness and absentmindedness. And I loved the running gag about bats (and hang gliding chipmunks!) not being able to carry more than their own weight.

Back to Talespin since you mentioned Becky in your post, I'm still shocked she was voiced by Sally Struthers. I had no idea until recently!

Scooby hates velma now?

Sadly, yes. His behavior in the most recent episode was so mean and OOC it made me wonder if he was bitten by Kujo...

He growled at Velma and lunged across a table to pull something out of her hands. While she was crying!

That scene made my inner child hurt. :(

I'll admit, I like Chip/Gadget better, but that's probably because Chip was my favorite of the two. With that said, I was always wishing they would bring up Gadget's dad again. They mention him in the pilot but never again.

But you know what the true pairing of Rescue Rangers is? Monterey Jack/Cheese! They have eternal love. XD

I'm really hoping the upcoming comic touches on Gadget's dad and the adventures he had with Monty in the past.

Monty/Cheese is my OTP, too. That relationship is refreshingly uncomplicated.
