Watching the new Scooby episode (which was awesome, by the way) tonight reminded me why I always liked Velma. I always had a complex about my height; and it was neat to see an almost adult woman who was obviously short and yet still awesome.
The situation in the comic is actually based on something that really happened. Back when my Aunt was still just my Uncle's girlfriend, she ALWAYS wore platform shoes. After they got engaged, she stopped wearing them altogether. She told me that she thought the platforms would make the height difference between them less noticeable. But then she realized that the difference was so significant (she's 5'3" and he's 6'9") that it was stupid to think that the few inches added by platforms would make them look any less awkward together.
I started thinking about my Aunt and Uncle while watching the show, which is why I opted to use Scooby characters (plus, fanart is fun!).
Over the past few years I've gotten a LOT more comfortable with my height. I used to wish I could be at least six feet tall like my cousins, baby sister, and paternal grandmother. But once I realized that being 5'1" is somewhat normal for women who don't have my family's circus freak gene, I started to feel better.
I also got a little taste of shadenfreude when I overheard my cousin and baby sister (who used to tease me constantly about being tiny) talk about how rough it is for them to find dates because all the boys they know are way shorter than they are. At least I know I'll never have that problem! ~_^

Thanks for the tip about the toonfic comm (I just joined it). It looks like a lot of fun. And it's neat to see an LJ fan community centered around Western cartoons that aren't named "Avatar".

Date: 2010-07-21 03:10 pm (UTC)As for pairings...most couples in Pixar movies are fairly cut and dry. The only ship I can think of that could inspire a shipper war is Marlon/Dorie. And maybe Jessie/Woody vs Jessie/Buzz. O_o

Date: 2010-07-20 02:52 pm (UTC)By the by, I did check out the cartoon you posted the other day. I grew up watching Scooby Doo despite it never being a favorite, but the newest incarnation seems to have a lot of potential. Fred's obsession with making traps seems a bit much though. I guess they needed to give him some sort of vice that'll work to the group's advantage...sometimes.

Date: 2010-07-20 09:00 pm (UTC)My paternal Grandmother (God rest her soul) was about six feet tall when she passed away at age 75. It wasn't until I mentioned her height to some of my friends (and got shocked reactions) that I realized it WASN'T normal for 70+ year old women to be that tall!
I had a tall friend back in school who had a freakishly tall boyfriend though, and she too wore platform shoes to compensate for being shorter. I always just wished she was more comfortable with being shorter than her boyfriend.
Almost every woman my giant Uncle ever dated went through a platform shoe phase even though wearing them was obviously pointless. I think it's just normal for women to do that when their boyfriend is WAY taller than they are.

Fred seems to be a hard character for writers to nail down since his persona in the original 60s cartoon is kinda bland. Almost every post 1980s reboot has tried doing something weird with him. Typically by turning him into a doofus/moron (what I like to call "The Gourry effect"). The trap thing may be a bit much; but the trap jokes made me laugh so I don't care.
I like the "oblivious/naive Boy Scout savant" thing they're doing with Fred in this series. In the most recent episode, I totally cracked up when he made a comment about the gang moving in together after high school and sharing a room and sleeping in bunk beds. Maybe it's just the way Frank Welker delivered it, but it was hilarious! XD
