I saw Toy Story 3 yesterday and the experience went something like this...

--

This movie is very conflicting. It constantly jumps between being funny, dramatic, and outright depressing. Don't get me wrong, it's a great movie. But it's also a bit of a bummer. It left me in a total funk for the rest of the day.

Before Toy Story started, there was a trailer for the live-action Smurf movie. Those CGI smurfs will haunt my nightmares for a while. O_o
I also saw a trailer for some weird owl movie (Guardian of Something-or-other) by the same people who did Happy Feet. Hopefully the owl movie won't be a plodding, preachy piece of over-rated garbage like Happy Feet was.

Day and Night was one of the best shorts Pixar has ever done. The mix of 2D and CGI was done brilliantly and the "sound effects as dialogue" gimmick was very clever. I could watch it all day.

As for Toy Story 3, it was fun to see toys I played with as kid show up in the movie. My Barbie house had the same plastic elevator as Ken's (but my house was made of cardboard and not nearly as fancy as his). And I think my Ken had some of the same clothes as movie-Ken.
I'm also sure that Lotso is based on a real teddy bear from the 80s because I remember scented dolls we're all the rage back then. And I know I had a lot of the preschoolers' toys (like the phone and the See'n'Say/Roulette wheel).

The Big Baby character seriously got to me. The fact that it had a real baby voice made it really unsettling (especially during the Daisy flashback and the dumpster scene). But it did make me smile when Barbie and Ken apparently "adopted" Big Baby in the end.

On a happier note, I LOVED the new Spanish cover of 'You Got a Friend In Me'. I may buy the soundtrack just for that. ^_^

I reacted exactly like you did. Including the crying when they hold hands.

Best. Review. Ever.

BTW, i'm loving how you're punctuating your posts with drawings and comics. Hahahahahah! Let us do it together! You're really improving!

Thanks for the compliments. ^_^

I did the comic because I'm not very good at writing serious reviews. Random, disjointed thoughts that look cool in comics tend to look a bit schizophrenic in print. lol

LOL I hear you there. Half of the comics I draw would sound positively crazy as a real post "So today my muse..."

Ha ha. Now I'm trying to imagine Rose as a novel...
"And then a thorny plant grew out of an open wound in her chest..."

I saw the Smurfs movie trailer posted elsewhere about a week ago, and...ugh, NO! Why must they continue to take my treasured childhood memories and hack them to pieces? WHY?! They apparently want to make a Smurfs trilogy. Lets see if the first even does well. Gah.

The Guardians of Ga'Hoole actually looks cool to me. I didn't see Happy Feet until this past year and yes, it was long, dull, and preachy. I still don't understand why so many people raved about it, putting us on a penguin craze that is still not dead. Here's hoping the owls will be more interesting at least.

I saw Toy Story 3 with my parents, my mom being really hard to please. Any time we see a CGI movie she complains that she prefers traditionally animated movies (yet she won't watch any 'current' Disney animated movies like Princess and the Frog). She actually loved the animated short, which is saying something. I definitely think the short was better since they combined traditional with CGI. I had more fun watching the characters themselves, not what was in them. The message at the end was very worthy, especially right now with intolerance for anyone different. I applaud Pixar for daring to go there.

Big Baby was harder to take given it made baby noises. At least the Babyface(?) character in the first movie never spoke... Big Baby scared me for a long while since it was so HUGE compared to the other toys, like a large dumb thug, but after the whole background story and then later when Lotso crushed Big Baby's old nametag... My gosh, I felt so bad for it! I love that Ken and Barbie have decided to care for Big Baby instead of manipulating it as Lotso had.

Also, lastly, I don't think Andy intends to give the toys away forever. Perhaps so, but considering he kept telling Bonnie he needed someone to take care of his toys while he was gone (emphasis on care, her tendency to be good to toys, etc.), if she can dare to part with them later I imagine he would want them to pass on to his own kids. I loved how he got into explaining the toys to her and then sat to play with her and his toys again. But man, they really tug at you when Bonnie spies Woody in the box and Andy obviously does not want to let her have Woody, but then decides to. That would have to be so hard to give your most cherished toy to a small child. I still haven't even let my nieces or nephews so much as touch my cherished toys... -_-;;

I think it's implied that when Bonnie is old enough the toys will be donated to the center, thus reuniting the gang with Barbie and Ken in a few years.

I've heard of the live-action Smurf movie, but I hadn't seen the CGI models until now. Seeing them for the first time on a giant screen freaked me out. Some cartoons belong in the 2D realm and should never be let out.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who was bored to sleep by Happy Feet! Guardians of Ga'Hoole did have a cool trailer. The movie could be awesome if they don't have a twist ending where the main characters are rescued by the Sierra Club or PETA.

Gah! The nametag crushing scene was so depressing! Any shred of sympathy I had for Lotso died right there. :(

I also like to think that Andy will get his toys back after he comes back from college. Even if he doesn't get them back, at least there's a good chance he'll see them again since his mother is good friends with Bonnie's mother.

LOL. I have a few cherished toys that I know I'll have a hard time parting with when I (or my sisters) have kids. Especially the one's that are delicate.

(Just came back from seeing it) I love this review, it sums it up nicely. XD (You're drawing has improved by the way. ^_~)

I had heard about the Smurf movie. I'll wait until I see it before I give my final judgment but... it's going to feel weird to me I think. ^_^

I think there are three possible scenarios for Bonnie since she seems to care about her toys as much as Andy does. 1.) She'll save the toys for her own children when she's older.
2.) She'll donated them to the Daycare which is a good place for toys now.
3.) She'll find another kids who loves and cares for his/her toys as much as she did (like Andy did with her). It could start a nice little cycle.
Anyway, I think they're in good hands.

Overall, good movie, but man does it tug the heart strings.
