According to ANN, both the Lodoss War OVA and the TV series are going to be re-released on DVD by Media Blasters. ^_^

This makes me really happy! I was never able to buy the Lodoss TV series (aka Chronicles of the Heroic Knight) because it was out-of-print and insanely hard to find by the time I found out it existed. Last year, I finally rented the CPM discs from Netflix and copied them onto VHS tapes. But it'll be great to finally be able to get it on DVD. I adore the 'Welcome to Lodoss' chibi shorts.

No release date yet. Hopefully, we'll get one soon.

That's wonderful news! I only recently came across the OVA at Half Price Books, but I've yet to check if they even work... It was the original set in any case, not the remastered like I would have hoped. I did get to see CotHK thanks to a friend, and I have to say I prefer the manga to the anime, but I still wanted the anime. I'll be able to finally own it!

I'm going to guess you watched the dub for CotHK, right? There are so many voice actors from the OVA especially who later voiced characters in Slayers, especially Lisa Ortiz. Be on the lookout for her Deedlit. I know the voice actor for Zangulus was also the voice for Eto, the priest. Man, maybe I ought to watch the OVA tomorrow... (I'm still amused at Crispin Freeman as Spark. Guess he got a small taste of Gourry at the end of Next after all.)

I discovered Lodoss right after Slayers (I think hearing Lisa Ortiz talk about the show in the NEXT featurette is what got me to buy the OVA).
Mind telling me how the manga is different? I managed to find one of the CotHK manga in a dollar bin at a comic shop (in the American "floppy format" no less!). But what little I saw looked great.

Oh yeah. Watching the dub is a trip. And it's a pretty odd coincidence that both the English and Japanese versions of CotHK had issues with the cast (Deedlit's Japanese VA was replaced and many of the English VAs were replaced halfway through!).
I was really impressed by the vocal range Freeman showed in CotHK. By the end of the show, Crispin Freeman was playing three main characters (Spark, Maar, and Garret) and they didn't sound like the same person at all.

The manga is a bit more dramatic..in the serious sense? I'll just say that the ending in the anime was based on the manga, but the sappiness was increased 99%. Also, a major villain in the manga was completely cut out of the anime, which made the ending kind of flat for me. Granted, the villain in question was really a dark character (and not because he was a Dark Elf!), but that's what made the manga's ending even better. Come to think of it, I'd not be at all surprised if Valgaav was based on him a great deal. I'd love to say more, but I really don't want to spoil everything.

It's been forever since I watched the Record of Lodoss War series, but it's one series I had to watch dubbed because I couldn't keep up with the story otherwise. Now that you mention it, Lisa Ortiz not voicing Deedlit for a few episodes sounds really familiar...

Yay~

I saw the OAV back when CPM had it (in fact, I think it was when we first got Netflix) but not the TV series... but I probably should if only for the "Welcome to Lodoss Island" segments and retro!Crispin Freeman. XD

Welcome to Lodoss Island is totally worth the price of the DVDs. I wish those skits had been a part of the OVA, too.

They're actually based on gag comics that were published after the OVA, I believe. CPM actually translated and released them all into two volumes (Welcome to Lodoss Island + WtLI 2). They're actually much more enjoyable than their animated counterparts since they covered so much more of the Record of Lodoss War stories. If you can still find them, I highly recommend them.
