Game review: the Sly Cooper Series

I recently dug out and replayed Sly Cooper 2 and Sly Cooper 3: Honor Among Thieves for the Playstation 2. This series is, hands down, just the best! It's a breath of fresh air considering that most modern JRPGs are derivative as hell and most American games released today star an angsty muscle-man "hero" who runs around butchering people/aliens/whatever in increasingly gruesome ways.
For those who've never played, Sly Cooper is like a mix of Ocean's 11 and the best Disney Afternoon shows. The games all have stories that are deep, yet clean enough that you could play it and let a 5-year-old watch. The first game plays like Crash Bandicoot. But the second and third games have absolutely addicting gameplay. And the artstyle is beautiful. The cartoony graphics and character designs really make it stand out.
Best of all, all three games in the series are "Greatest Hits" titles, so you can get them super cheap on Amazon or at Gamestop. I HIGHLY reccomend picking them up (you can skip the first game, though) if you love video games and you need a fix.
Oh, another reason to get this game is the characters. Sly and Carmelita's romantic twist on the Lupin-Zenigata relationship is so fun to watch.

Date: 2009-10-11 02:27 am (UTC)If you ever do get a hold of a PS2, you should totally try the Sly Cooper games. Judging from the Disney kick you've posted about in your LJ, I'm sure you'd enjoy it. Personally, I love how the games make me feel the same way I did as a child when I'd watch a really exciting episode of Talespin or Ducktales.
I also love a good platformer. And, like you, I find the shoot 'em up sandbox games terribly boring. And, even if its just a game, I don't like playing as one of those amoral characters that mows down cops and hookers. >_<

Date: 2009-10-11 03:09 am (UTC)I hate the premise of games like Grand Theft Auto. If I'm going to be shooting something, I want it to be for a good reason! And something being an alien doesn't cut it for me (ugh, Halo). Which is why I love the Metroid Prime games because even if you are playing a bounty hunter, you don't have to shoot everything you see. I like to be as unintrusive as possible when exploring, leaving the alien creatures alone...unless they're aggressive, in which I often do have to defend myself... Or heck, the original Goldeneye for Nintendo 64! That was great because if you shot everyone you saw it only alerted more guards to your presence, so it was vital to your survival to only shoot enemies when you had no other option. I wish there were more games like that...

(blood is messy and makes guard flunkies freak out and run around like headless chickens.)

Date: 2009-10-11 03:58 am (UTC)I'd not call it nerdery so much, it's more that I've been playing Mario games since I was alive (since I came into being about the same time Mario did). As long as Mario games continue to be fun, I'll continue to play them. I'm eagerly waiting for the New Super Mario Bros. Wii game when it comes out, I've had it reserved already. I'm hoping to see any kind of cool promo for it. (I didn't know that about Chrono Trigger DS, but I'll be thankful I found it used -in mint condition!- in the bargain bin at Gamestop. And one of these days I'll even get around to beating it again..)

Oh yes, the box is most definitely in Brawl... as Snake's taunt. Only one he gets, where everyone gets two.
