I forgot about this for a while; but now I'm almost done!! :)
Day 26 - What are your views on the Friendship is Magic fandom?
Here's the cliff notes version....IT NEEDS TO F***KING CHILL OUT!!
And here's the long-winded, armchair psychologist version...
When I first heard of the Brony phenomenon, I thought it was cute. And I thought it was awesome that this show could serve as a shining example of how a show made (mostly) by girls and for girls could be accessible to everyone if enough effort and talent was put behind it.
However, like all big fandoms, the more vocal and obsessive types have started to take over and are now scaring people away from the show with their crazy.
The "Bronies" get WAY too offended whenever anyone pokes fun at the show and/or the large male fandom. Even if the jokes are mild and the coverage is positive overall (see the recent 'Red Eye goes to Brony Con' segment on Fox News), the fans act as if they're being personally attacked just because the coverage doesn't gush about the show like an excited fanboy! News flash, guys: The Brony phenomenon IS weird and it is kinda funny! You can't demonize people for laughing at it!
And then there's the people that have turned this show into a soapbox for them to vent their political grievances! The downside to having a strongly feminist show is that some of the fringe wackos in the fandom are going to project their personal grievances onto it. So you get a lot of comms where people take political correctness to ridiculous extremes. I'd go on, but I already vented about this subject here and here.
But thankfully, there is one haven away from all the wank (

Day 27 - How has the show helped you?
It restored my hope that my country can make cartoons (and TV shows and movies and books and comics....) with female characters that aren't feminist nightmares.
In the past year or so, a lot of shows have disappointed me because of their utter incompetence when it came to writing female characters who weren't primarily defined by their feelings for a man (cue obligatory reference to the-show-that-shall-not-be-named) or by their "sexy" bodies. It makes me so happy that we now have proof that female characters can be compelling to a general audience without a tacked-on love interest(s) and without being ridiculously sexualized.
Thank goodness for Lauren Faust! It's sad that she's not directly involved with the show anymore. But here's hoping that her new found popularity will lead to her getting more work and maybe some funding to turn her own personal creations into a TV show.
