I agree with the above poster, layers are the way to go. Anymore I'll have my rough sketch layer, finalized drawing layer, color layer, and then shading layer(s) if I have the time. The background always comes last, if ever. I'll admit I'm not one for backgrounds most of the time.

It will get easier to draw smoother lines with practice, too. A lot of practice. And yes, the eraser being part of the pen was genius, as I too hated having to always select the eraser tool! Although sometimes I also just undo what I did in Photoshop. That can save a lot of time and frustration in getting my drawings to turn out somewhat well.
