Seriously, it REALLY bugged me how the writers degraded his character over the course of the first season. At first, I really liked him. Yeah, he was a jerk. But I identified with his drive to care for his naive younger brother in a rough city. And it would have been nice to see him loosen up and learn to let go a little via his friendship with Korra and his relationship with a fun-loving gal like Asami.
But, instead of that, we saw Mako's primary character conflict go from "How can my brother and I get by in this harsh city?" to "Which chick should I bang?". IMO, his two-timing sluttyness came out of nowhere and felt out of sync with how he had been previously characterized. And to top it off, HE FACED NO CONSEQUENCES FOR JERKING THEM AROUND AND GOT EXACTLY WHAT HE WANTED IN THE END!!!
