I'm usually not the type to spam my LJ with "OMG! WATCH THIS FUNNY VIDEO" posts. But this one cracked me up so much that I just HAD to share it.

As if we needed further proof that FiM blows every other My Little Pony incarnation out of the water! XD

:D

I never saw the other incarnations, but I really like this one.

My childhood would like a word with you... We wouldn't even have this version of Ponies without the original (and still best, in my opinion) toy line and cartoon from the 80s, so by default it had to be pretty good. ;)

Anyway, I wasn't sure what was so great about the video. Especially when you check out the current toy offerings. o_O

Hey, I loved the original ponies, too (I WAS a little girl in the 80s after all). But that series doesn't exactly hold up when you watch it as an adult. It's not HORRIBLE, but it's not something I'd watch unless I was feeling super nostalgic.

The video is funnier if you've seen the new show because of the disconnect between the old lyrics and how the new-ponies behave. And also because of the goofy faces.
...at least I thought so (different strokes, I suppose ^_^;)

And I agree that the new toys aren't that great. They don't even succeed at looking like the cartoon (which should be easy considering how simple the new designs are!)

I still prefer it, oddly enough (I bought the first season on DVD a few years ago), mainly because there's a larger cast of characters, and I always liked that the pony's world was accessible to humans. What little girl didn't dream of being able to be like Megan and go on adventures in Ponyland? Plus, on a somewhat odd note, my nieces seem to prefer it. When I put it on, they get absorbed in it. When they caught me watching the new version, they quickly lost interest in it.

I'm just ancient and prefer stories that existed to tell stories, not to make pop cultural references to movies, the internet, and whatever else "bronies" get all excited about. Sigh.

And on a bit of a tangent, Spike being with the ponies still doesn't make much sense. Yeah, I saw that Twilight made his egg hatch, and now he's her assistant, and yet no other pony seems to have done this? What's he supposed to do as he does age? Remain with the ponies, or just up and leave to do dragon things? At least in the original he was with the bad guys, until he came into contact with the ponies, who he decided to live with. Kindness from the ponies won out over fear from the big bad. Eh...

(But argh, the new toy line! I wish they'd bring back some of the classic collection.)

This discussion makes me think that I should pick up the old show (is that DVD still in print?). It's been a few years since I re-watched it and maybe my memories of it being condescending aren't entirely accurate.

The new show gets a bad rap because of the wacky fandom. But I think it stands up pretty well and I don't notice THAT many out of place pop culture references. But I guess we just have different thresh holds for that kind of thing.

The set is still available on Amazon. at least. I haven't seen it on store shelves since I bought it at Best Buy way back when. I ought to see if they ever released season two...

Many of my guy friends are part of the wacky fandom. It drives me CRAZY to go to game night, only for some of them to be too busy playing with some new MLP app of Fluttershy talking, watching looped videos of Pinkie Pie on YouTube...and the one has even started to collect the toys. It's weird...but mostly annoying because they parrot the silliness from the fandom. -_-

(The series has its good points, but I still prefer the original series, or even Power Puff Girls if I want to watch a more "current" girl show.)
