I swear to G-d, this is a real Captain Planet screen shot (here's proof. Just skip to 2:15)! Velma and Shaggy really did make a background appearance in a Captain Planet episode about inner city gang violence. I'll give you a minute to let that sink in....
..........OK, here goes!

-Velma: OK, Shaggy. We've influtrated the Planeteers' HQ. Now we just need to find proof that they blew up the Mystery Machine and burned down my school's science lab!
-Shaggy: Are you, like, sure they're guilty?
-Velma: Those dirty hippies have been sending my lab threatening letters all week! And they kept bugging Fred to replace our van with a Prius right before it blew up!
-Shaggy: Uh, the term "dirty hippie" is kinda mean, don't you thi-
-Velma: And Fred told me that they also kidnapped Scooby Doo and released him into the Amazon jungle.
-Shaggy: THEY WHAT!?!!??
-Velma: They said they were "releasing him from human enslavement". Fred and Daphne are trying to track him down now. Didn't you wonder why they weren't with us?
-Shaggy: DAMN DIRTY HIPPIES!!! &%&$#@!!!!

I don't.

....well, that's not entirely true. Captain Planet is good for a laugh (especially the gun&blood drenched "very special episodes"). And it's an easy shorthand insult for Conservatives like me to use against people who accuse us of wanting to rape Mother Earth. LOL

Maybe that's why I like it, being a bleeding-heart liberal and all. Eh, honestly, I just liked the show as a kid and never thouht of it in political terms.

Irony in that Shaggy was much more of a hippie... Regardless, I actually liked Captain Planet as a kid, but then I'm all for hugging trees and being good to nature anyway. I never caught the cameo!

When I was a kid I thought Captain Planet was dorky; but I just LOVED the idea of having a ring that shoots out fire, wind, water, or earthquakes (and the heart ring could be cool if the right person got a hold of it).

I didn't get the political stuff when I was a kid either. But even then I could tell that it was being too heavy-handed to be taken seriously. I mean, you don't have to be a politically savvy adult to realize that having a bunch of villains who want to dump trash everywhere just because (even if it doesn't net them any profit) is lazy writing. :P

But, Captain Planet! He's a hero! And has a really catchy theme song, not to mention tagline. :D It certainly wasn't the best of the cartoons I grew up with, but I've always liked shows that focus on responsibility I guess. Again, I grew up in an area totally surrounded by nature and wildlife, not to mention dealing with people moving in who would cut down the trees and kill off the animals, so I was glad the message was getting out that, "No, destroying the earth is NOT okay!"

Among other things. I know it also addressed issues like AIDs, so it was actually very informative. I prefer that still to cartoons and even television shows that don't inform at all, instead sticking to stupid comedy or actually talking down to the viewer.

But, I digress. Rings with elemental power are always awesome! I always wanted to befriend the animals. XD

Maybe. But I personally could never bring myself to take advice from a man who thinks it's OK to flaunt around in a red speedo and a green mullet.

Considering I took advice from a hero wearing nothing more than a speedo and boots (He-Man!)....I don't think that says much about me. Oh well! At least they tried!

I don't think its lazy writing. I mean, how many bad people in real life have a reason? Not that many. Assuming you agree dumping trash makes one a villain. I mean, its hokey but that doesn't make it lazy writing. I don't agree with the message entirely and I don't see it really blaming one political party or another though. I just see it as teachin kids to be more earth-friendly.

I think people tend to over-analyze kids' shows.

If you watch the show today as an adult, it comes across like propaganda (not surprising, considering who created it). Teaching kids to be more environmentally friendly is all well and good; but I think it's wrong to do so by scaring them into thinking another ice age is going to freeze them to death if they don't recycle (BTW, remember back when Global COOLING was the imminent environmental disaster?).

And no, dumping trash does not automatically make one evil. What's evil is teaching kids simplistic nonsense "like all big corporations are bad" and "small, third world villages are happier living in the stone age and shouldn't be exposed to modern, wasteful conveniences like washing machines and electricity".
Those were both plots that were regularly used in that show.
