I finally got around to watching the copy of Satoshi Kon's Paprika that I got for Christmas and it's awesome. I went in not knowing if I would like it because it has a plot centered on dreams; which typically means you're getting a pretentious mindfu*k movie. And I HATE pretentious mindfu*k stories (Evangelion, I'm looking at you). Thankfully that wasn't the case.

It's hard to describe the plot without giving anything away. So all I'm going to say is that the whole "dream invasion" concept is handled very well. And the characters are great, too.
The dub version had a neat surprise. In this movie, Yuri Lowenthal FINALLY breaks out of the "leading teenage hero" rut that he's been stuck in for the past couple of years and plays a character that is...very different that the type he always plays. I actually didn't know it was him until I checked the credits. Seriously, if the guy did more stuff like this, the internet wouldn't be full of angry dub fans insisting he take a damned vacation (or retire).

After seeing all of Satoshi Kon's movies, I'm going on record and saying that it's terribly unfair that Hayao Miyazaki gets all the mainstream attention (and John Lassester man love) while only hardcore otaku and a few film buffs know who Kon is. Miyazaki is great. But Kon is equally skilled and could very easily surpass him one day.

In short, if you're in the mood for an original, fun ride; pick this movie up. Even if you don't like the story, the amazing visuals and animation will make up for it. Just keep in mind that the movie has some nudity and violence (just in case that sort of thing squicks you out).

It has an R rating, doesn't it? The animation I saw for the commercials looked amazing, but at the same time looked like the sort of thing that would give me nightmares. I was given the song from the movie though, which is just excellent! I feel a bit bad I've only seen Millennium Actress, but I agree, he deserves as much praise (if not more) for his movies as Miyazaki. Hopefully in Japan he does at least.

Yeah. It's extremely weird; but I'm not sure if I'd classify it as nightmare fuel since it didn't creep me out. There are some creepy images and freaky dolls (think Chucky in a kimono) in a few scenes. So keep that in mind if/when you decide to watch it.

I love Millennium Actress! On top of being really good, I think it's also his only PG rated film. Even though it's never used in a gratitude/fanservicey way, it stinks that all his other movies have some degree of nudity and violence because it makes it hard to watch with other people. ^_^;

Oh trust me, what little I saw was enough to creep me out, so it having an R rating made it even easier to decide not to watch it. (I generally avoid R movies. Although anymore PG-13 movies are worse, so I generally avoid them now as well..)

The nudity and violence is disappointing, but different cultures view such things differently. I'm no fan of either, but if I had to see one...gah, I think I'd rather go with the violence. Although if it's in moderation, then who knows?

God I love Kon. If miyazaki is Disney, he's Bluth (without the crappy string of movies)

You might not like Papika because of the disturning imagery but I really, really, REALLY recommend one of his other movie : Tokyo Godfathers. It is an amazingly cute movie about 3 homeless people finding an abandonned baby and trying to find it's parents. On christmas. It's got so much fluff and crying moments...

Totally. Tokyo Godfathers in similar in tone to Millennium Actress (ie no nightmare fuel scenes). So if you liked Millennium Actress, you'll love Tokyo Godfathers.

I love watching that movie at Christmas time. It gives me the warm fuzzies. ^_^

LOL. Let's hope Kon never hits a similar burn out phase.
