I've debated plunking down the $200+ it would cost for me to get all the Utena DVDs I don't have yet. But now I don't have to because Right Stuf is putting out a boxset soon. With the remastered Japanese video to boot. HUZZAH!
It's strange. Normally I hate confusing mindfu*k anime where all the characters are psychological messes (watching Evangelion made me want to punch a hole in my TV); but I enjoyed watching Utena. Maybe it's because the show was pretty. Or maybe it's the nostalgia I feel when I remember watching this as a teenager and giggling at Rachael Lillis and other Pokemon VAs saying bizarre lines and naughty words. Either way, I've wanted to collect this show for ages and soon I'll be able to do that without searching the internet for out-of-print copies and praying I don't pay for bootlegs. I love Right Stuf! ^_^
If any of you are thinking about checking this show out, don't be put off by all the haters who like to savage the dub. Aside from Anthy's VA, all of the American actors rock. The Shiori episodes are especially fun to watch dubbed because they feature Lisa Ortiz as a very convincing (and very freaky) villain. And Crispin Freeman is just awesome as Touga the Man-Whore. ~_^
