Not necessarily. A few JRPGs have bucked the generic anime look in favor of something more unique and/or westernized (**see spiffy Shadow Hearts icon**).

I don't hate Scrappy as much as a lot of fans do (I'm just indifferent to the little runt). I think he'd be a wacky shopkeeper or something since he's not physically suited for a fight (as much as he'd like to think otherwise).
Basically, Scrappy would be that one weird dude who inexplicably shows up in dungeons to sell your party healing potions and help you save your game before you fight the bosses. LOL
