So, they're making a new Scooby Doo direct-to-DVD movie featuring puppets instead of animation or actors. And these puppets are modeled after the Pup Named Scooby Doo designs!!

I'm TRYING to hold in my excitement until some information about the writers and voice actors involved is released. But this trailer looks pretty cool so far! It's a Wal-Mart exclusive DVD and it will be released July 23.

Since Pup is my favorite Scooby incarnation ever, I'll share some of my hopes for this thing here:

In this episode, Scooby runs away from home because a misunderstanding causes him to think the gang doesn’t love him anymore. Get your tissues ready, folks!

In this episode, Velma gets hired by the Coolsville chapter of NASA to launch a science experiment into space. Naturally, a ghost swoops in to muck it up.

This episode takes place on an Indian reservation. I think you know what this means: We get to see some awkward, unintentional, 80s-era cartoon racism! HOORAY!!

Jinkies! It's been a while since I did one of these!

As much as I love doing reviews of Pup Named Scooby Doo episodes, I thought it would be fun to do an episode re-cap from a Scooby show that isn’t clouded by my nostalgia goggles. What’s New Scooby Doo is a decent show; but I found it to be VERY hit-and-miss. It got some big things wrong (I’ll get to them later on). But one of the things it did right was making Fred and Velma fun and interesting without flanderizing them too much. And this particular episode was all about Velma and the one bizarre phobia that was strong enough to make her play hooky during a mystery…

I promised scans for this book....

...and now here they are! Enjoy!

This comic is a real treat. It was written AND drawn by people who actually worked on the show. So it looks and feels like watching a "lost episode" in storyboard form. Best $6 I ever spent. ^_^

I LOVE this scene from A Pup Named Scooby Doo...

...so I decided to re-draw it with the grown-up versions of the gang!

I can't believe it's taken me this long to get to episode one!
Well, here it is! Hope it was worth the wait:

Because this is the first episode, the characters are slightly different and it has a few elements that got scrapped later on. Despite that, it does a good job of setting up the universe and the characters. And it’s insanely fun and extremely cute, too.

This episode is a bit weird and I’m torn on whether to call it “cute” or “mildly disturbing”.

OK, the actual title is Scooby Dude. But everybody knows it as “The Drug Episode”.  I’m sure most of you are already aware that every show produced in the late 80s/early 90s was legally obligated to make a “very special” drug episode even if that particular subject matter was completely out of place. Typically, said drug episodes would fail because their unintentional hilarity would drown out any legitimate anti-drug message. Pup’s drug episode was one of them.

And no, the unintentional hilarity does not come from the popular perception that Shaggy is a stoner (though that does play a part). Believe it or not, it gets even weirder than that…
